Holidays’ end
The rain spatters
its staccato tune
To the rhythmic
clatter of the windscreen wipers
And the dull whine
of the wet wheels.
Veiled, unreflected
headlights flash by across the road,
The countryside
crouches under a monochrome sky.
The bales of hay
which yesterday soaked up the sun
Are now drenched by
the relentless rain
As we drive away
from Rugby,
The summer stay
over.
